Make A Difference Day - Volunteer Center Projects

1-Saturday FOOD SORT
The Second Harvest Food Bank will be having a food sort on Make a Difference Day!  Come out and help Second Harvest on Saturday, October 24, from 8:00 am to 12:00 noon. Second Harvest Food Bank is located at 800 Ohlone Parkway, Watsonville, CA 95076.  15 more volunteers are needed for the food sort.  Volunteers age 7 and older are welcome!  Youth from the ages of 7-14 must be accompanied by an adult who is 21 or older.

For more information, please contact Danny Robles at (831) 722-7110 or email danny@thefoodbank.org.

2-HABITAT RESTORATION
The California Native Plant Society needs volunteers at Natural Bridges State Park on Make a Difference Day!  The Santa Cruz County chapter of the Native Plant Society works to restore native habitat in our parks and protected land.  This is a great way to learn about the natural systems surrounding us while helping to restore special and wild places!

A minimum of 20 volunteers from ages 8-80 is needed from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm at Natural Bridges State Park.  No prior work experience is necessary – just show up at the park.  Wear comfortable, layered clothing, bring something to drink, and bring lots of enthusiasm!  Work will go on rain or shine, but if the weather becomes particularly unpleasant, we’ll call it a day.  Tools will be provided, but please bring gloves.

For more information about this event, please contact the Program Leader, Linda Brodman, at (831) 462-4041 or email redwdm@pacbell.net.  You may also view the chapter website at http://www.cruzcnps.org, and the state website at http://www.cnps.org.

3-WETLANDS RESTORATION
Watsonville Wetlands Watch will be hosting their monthly 4th Saturday volunteer event together with Make A Difference Day this month.  Join our restoration staff and volunteers to be a part of the regular habitat restoration that is occurring in the wetlands surrounding us.  Discover the wetlands that are home to many endangered species such as the California Red-Legged frog and the Western Pond turtle.  Learn about how native plants are helping the environment and what we are doing to protect the native plants and animals around us.

We will meet at the Fitz Wetlands Education Resource Center located at the top of the Pajaro Valley High School campus (500 Harkins Slough Rd.) at 9 am on Saturday October 24th.  Please bring water, wear layered work clothes, sturdy shoes and a sun hat.  We will provide tools, gloves and refreshments.  Up to 20 volunteers are needed!

Contact Mary for more information at 831-566-4938 or mary@watsonvillewetlandswatch.org
